Future Students

Welcome Future Students,

Congratulations on taking the first step towards a rewarding and impactful journey in Human Resource Development! At The University of the West Indies (The UWI), we are thrilled to welcome you to our HRD Programmes Unit, a part of the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work. Here you will gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to become leaders in the fields of human resources management and development, employee and labour relations and organisational behaviour.

The PhD programme in Organisational Behaviour is designed to develop scientists and practitioners for an academic or a professional career in organisational analysis and intervention, whether in consultancy, within industry or in the public sector. This doctoral programme provides not only an excellent theoretical foundation for organisational research, but also, through its internship requirements, the technical skills needed to understand and contend with the complex issues which arise from social interaction within organisations.

Our MSc HRD programme is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices that drive strategic human resource development. Throughout your studies, you will engage in a variety of learning experiences that will prepare you to tackle real-world HR challenges and contribute to the success of any organisation.

The Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Human Resource Development (Diploma HRD) offers continuing education credits to persons who already possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in any field other than HR. The students for this programme are persons who do not have the requisite academic training for their work in an administrative capacity with the human capital of the organisation. The second group of students who are attracted to this programme are persons who take it for continuing education credits as prescribed by their recognised professional body.

What You Can Expect:

1. Rigorous Curriculum:
Our various curricula cover a wide range of topics, including strategic staffing, labour and industrial relations, organisational behaviour, organisational development, training and development. You will learn from experienced faculty members who are expert researchers and high-level practitioners in their fields and dedicated to your success.

2. Practical Experience:
We believe in learning by doing. You will have the opportunity to participate in practica, internships, projects, research and case studies that cement the theoretical knowledge and provide hands-on experience and practical insights into the HR and OB professions.

3. Networking Opportunities:
Our programmes offer numerous opportunities to network with industry professionals, alumni, and peers. These connections will be invaluable as you advance in your career and seek to build strong research clusters and professional networks.

4. Personal and Professional Growth:
Beyond the technical skills, our programmes focus on developing your leadership, communication, and critical thinking abilities. You will be challenged to grow both personally and professionally, preparing you to be a versatile and effective researcher or professional.

5. Supportive Community:
You will be part of a vibrant and supportive community of students, faculty, and staff. Our goal is to create an environment where you can thrive academically and personally, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Tips for Success:

  • Stay Curious: Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and curiosity. The OB and HR fields are dynamic, and staying updated with the latest trends and best practices is crucial.
